火防凧(ひぶせのたこ)

The “Kite Market” is an event that dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868). In those days, the city of Edo was often hit by fire, and since winds often caused large fires, people bought kites from the shrine as “hibuse-no-tako” (kites of fire prevention) to protect them from fire.

Since then, the kite market has been a traditional event in Edo, attracting crowds of people and stalls lined up in the vicinity.

Every year, about 50,000 people visit the market on the hatsuuma and ninouma days alone.
